Search for high column density systems with gamma ray bursts

چکیده

We investigate the possibility to search for metal-poor high column density (> ∼ 10 cm) clouds at high redshift (z) by using gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows. Such clouds could be related to primeval galaxies which may cause a burst of star formation. We show that a large part of hydrogen is in molecular form in such a high column density environment. Therefore, hydrogen molecules (H2) rather than hydrogen atoms should be searched for. Then we show that infrared H2 lines are detectable for metal-poor (∼ 0.01 solar metallicity) high column density (logNH [cm ] > ∼ 23.5) systems at high-z without suffering dust extinction. Optical properties of dust in infrared could also be constrained by observations of high column density systems. Some possible scenarios of producing high column density systems are finally discussed in the context of galaxy evolution.

High Column Densities and Low Extinctions of Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for Hypernovae and Dust Destruction

We analyze a complete sample of g-ray burst afterglows and find X-ray evidence for high column densities of gas around them. The column densities are in the range 10–10 cm, which is right around the average column density of Galactic giant molecular clouds. We also estimate the cloud sizes to be 10–30 pc, implying masses *10 . This strongly suggests that g-ray bursts lie within star-forming reg...

Determining the location of Gamma-Ray Bursts through the evolution of their soft X-ray absorption

We investigate through dedicated numerical simulations the evolution of the soft Xray absorption properties of a cloud surrounding a gamma-ray burst source. We show that the absorption properties of the material are strongly modified by the ionization induced by the intense burst flux. We derive the temporal evolution of the measured column density as a function of the density and size of the a...

Search for gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

Satellites that are capable of detecting gamma-ray bursts can trigger the ANTARES neutrino telescope via the real-time gamma-ray bursts coordinates network. Thanks to the “all-data-toshore” concept that is implemented in the data acquisition system of ANTARES, the sensitivity to neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts is significantly increased when a gamma-ray burst is detected by these satellites. Th...

The Optical and X-ray Afterglows of Γ-ray Bursts Do Not Probe the Same Gas: Ionisation in Grb Environments

We compare the H I column densities from Lyα absorption to the metal column densities from soft X-ray absorption in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. Of the eight bursts for which useful measures are obtained we find a range in metallicities from sub-solar to a few hundred times the solar value. The lack of correlation in the column densities, and the large range and extreme values of these ‘me...
